Take away thier power

Posted on June 24, 2010

I don’t really have an opinion about Marshal Mathers (aka. the rapper M&M) one way or the other, but the other day I heard an interview with him and he said something profound.  Apparently he had a serious battle with drug addiction and rather than dealing with it he hid it from everyone around him.  He said that he didn’t want to admit he had a drug problem because that was showing weakness.  Then, after he nearly lost his life to drugs, he understood a different reality…and this is where the profound statement came in: “When you admit your weakness it takes away their power.”  Try it. See if it works for you.  It did for me.

I couldn’t agree more with the statement. As a child I have always been extremelly shy. I was so shy that I would not even make eye contact with people in fear of having to carry a conversation with them. It wasn’t until I got into College that I was forced to face my fear. Speach class forced me out of my comfort zone and taught me that the more you learn about yourself the more powerful you become, which in turns can be translated in taking the power away from my fear and internalizing to better myself. Today I am constantly challenging myself and looking to face all my fears. It is empowering every time I overcome them. Sometimes I do it without even realizing I am until I look back.

I mean it really does make sense because weakness can take control over someone unwillingly and to be able admit a weakness takes a lot out of a person. To even be able identify a weakness that you have to yourself is an accomplishment because most do not like to admit that one of their bad habits may be a weakness. on top of admittting a weakness to yourself and going further out to admit to the loved ones around you takes strentgh and I think that, in itself, releases the power of the weakness

It is tough to admit weaknesses. In many cases I like to hide any weaknesses that I have from my peers. I am afraid to be looked down upon or made fun of from my weaknesses. I feel that this could help me overcome some current obstacles in my life

This comment made by the artist Eminem makes a lot of sense. It must have taken not only a lot of courage to confront his weaknesses, but also to admit them publicly. Especially in his case. When confronting and admitting a weakness that a person has, it may never come easy. But the reward after confronting it and conquering it will be great. It can only help a person grow and/or mature as an individual and make a person stronger and more confident in him/herself. The other part of Eminem’s comment is the control part. When confronting a personal issue, it will no longer have control over a person and other people won’t have control over you as well. Easier said than done of course, but the reward is great. In Eminem’s case, he has learned and grown so much because of what he has went through. Now Eminem is one the most popular artists of today.

This statement could be the key not just to my own weaknesses but to the weaknesses of our society as a whole. You are only as strong as you believe you are, so by admitting your weakness you can defeat it, further more becoming stronger. Before you can truly overcome some measure of a weakness whether it be a psychological or physiological struggle you must confront it and be able to pin point what that weakness could be. In my own life I sometimes find myself taking the easy way out because my major weakness is failure. So i feel that sometimes if I stay on an easier route I can’t fail. However, it is just as easy to fail on the easy route as it is on the hard, and by welcoming the idea of failure in I am able to battle it so that I can succeed. If I take every situation that I am weak in and can admit those feelings, I will empower myself not only in the situation at hand but also in life.

When I was reading this I thought of the Jack Handy quote,”it takes a big man to cry but an even bigger man to laugh at that man.” I thought that was funny but it definately takes a big man to admit that he is wrong or that he needs help. The reason it takes a big man, in my opinion, is because it is much more challenging and promotes the most growth of character. The same things goes for fears, to face them you have to admit they are there in the first place. Once you get passed that, you can progress and the saying is right, they loose power over you. You may feel weak doing it because it is out of your comfort zone but once your there you can spread the comfort zone to that level and your fears are no longer fears.

This blog couldn’t be more correct. With many cases that I have seen throughout my life, there is many times where someone including myself haven’t admited their weakness because of the big idea of it taking away your power, just like eminem said. This is a huge probelm in everyday life. People are too afraid to admit when they are wrong or admit when they have any type of weakness, whether it be at work or with your friends. It doesn’t matter how you look because their is always room for improvement. I can understand why he tried to hide it for so long knowing who he is and how he wanted people to perceive him as a rapper. Although it might have been some what embarassing, it changed his life in a positive way and that’s why people should always know their flaws and be able to talk about them openly. I have been getting alot better with this and I believe if everyone works on it, it can make a huge impact in everday life and in a certain persons life in general.

This statement is very true, I believe if you don’t admit you have a weakness, when you clearly do, you are hurting yourself and stopping yourself from growing as an individual. Not addressing a weakness and trying to deal with it alone is not easy, and it controls you. A weakness has no power over you if you admit it, because you’re identity what is hurting you and you are making progress to turn that weakness into a strength. Like in sports, if an athlete doesn’t fix their weaknesses, their weaknesses will be exploited and they will be taken advantage of.

This statement is very correct. i believe that if one does not admit that there is a problem or you have a weakness, it will only get worse. Having to admit you have a weakness is a big step, but if you hold it in, you are only surrendering yourself to it; giving it the ability to control your life. Weakness doesnt have any power over an individual if they can admit it. admiting their weakness also gets someone to come out their comfort zone, forcing them to make a change.

    Sep 16, 2010

I also agree with the statement. As we have talked about in other classes Mark has taught you need to get outside of your comfort zone to really grow and learn. By admitting your weaknesses, that is leaving your comfort zone because I really do not think anyone is completely comfortable with saying stuff about themselves that shows they are weak. I believe that this gives power to others because it makes you kind of vulnerable in the situation and once you accept your weakness and move on, their power is gone.

  13. Scott Dysinger
    Sep 16, 2010

This is an extremely powerful statement. Admitting a weakness is very hard to do for people. No one wants to be thought of as weak or having weaknesses. However people are in denial and don’t really look at themselves as having weaknesses which in essence makes you weak. When you are weak people have the power over you. When you can admit to being weak and having weaknesses, then you are making strides to becoming stronger. People will no longer have power over you since you are taking control of yourself.

When it comes down to it, todays society is full of people who will never willingly admit their weaknesses. With myself being included in that category, it is just tough to face the judgement and gossip you will hear when admitting your weakness. Even if people wouldnt judge you or think anything of it, its the fear of being judged that holds people back. These are reasons why it is understandable that he hid his weaknesses for so long. Once they are put out there one can improve and become a better person.

    Sep 16, 2010

I could not agree with this statement more. I feel as the first step in taking the power out of weakness is addressing that your weakness is present. It is very similar to the idea of turning your weaknesses into your strengths. I feel as if at times we are too comfortable with being comfortable and that we do not branch out because we fear of the outcome. However, if we recognize that at times we “play it too safe” we can begin to become overcome that weakness and the fear associated with it.

    Sep 16, 2010

When i read this quote for some reason it really impacted me. When i think of the weaknesses in my life they are things that i do hide from the rest of the world. If people including myself could just admit their weaknesses it would take the hold or power they have over you. I feel as though once you are strong enough to admit it then you are strong enough to overcome it.

I agree, when someone is able to confront their fears the power of that fear over that person is taken away. One of my biggest fears was stepping out of my comfort zone and meeting new people. It was difficult for me and sometimes made me feel really uncomfortable. But by moving around class and meeting more of my classmates it has become easier and easier to participate in class discussions. By personal experience I know that by facing my fear of meeting new people I have benefited as a student.

I think realizing and actually facing your weakness is one of the hardest thing to do. Once you admit to them and you tell yourself that you are ready to overcome this, it makes your weakness weaker than you. It may not be as easy as it seems, and sometimes it does take time. But taking that step to actually have the courage to know or face them is a big start. If we were to try fight all our weakness or things that makes us uncomfortable, it will definitely help us become a better person. This will give us an opportunity to lessen our weakness and turn this weakness as an added strength in our life.

In our culture, weaknesses are imperfections that we are hestitant to admit to our peers. This quote by Eminem sums up the idea that once we are able to admit our weaknesses, we have lifted the burden from ourselves. This allows us to feel more open and confident about the situation knowing that we no longer have to keep it from others. Admitting your weaknesses is a much more empowering way of exposing the truth, rather than have people find out through others. If they were to find out through other people it shows even more weakness because you were unable to be open and honest about the weakness in the first place.

I must say that this comment is a big help to anyone in life. Weakness hinders our ability to achieve our goals. The satisfaction that you get when you set out to do something and finally get it, is worth all the pitfalls and the obstacles you go through. So by acknowledging your weaknesses you don’t give them ropes to your nerves. You chase your dreams without feeling like you are holding something in.

Accepting ones weakness is the first step to overcome any obstacle in life. I believe this applies not only when you have a problem of addiction like Eminem had, but to any problem in life. Knowing your weakness will help you to become a better person and eventually overcome any obstacle. This quote really made me realize of the things that I have been hidding away, it is human nature to try to hide your weakness so other won’t pray on them. It takes a lot of courage to recognize that you might have a problem (weakness)and it takes even more to try to solve it and move on with your life.

    Sep 16, 2010

I feel that by admitting your weakness, you are making yourself aware of what needs to be strengthened and worked on. It puts into focus on a goal that needs to be achieved. It requires a person to put aside their ego and decide if they want to change and improve themselves and an individual, or stay in their “comfort zone” and hinder their growth. Nobody is perfect and I know that when I’ve worked on my weaknesses (maybe not as extreme as drug addiction)I’ve only seen positive results. As Albert Einstein once said “in the middle of difficulty, lies opputunity .” Another quote which I’ve heard in Mystery Men starring Ben Stiller was, “when you doubt your powers, you give powers to your doubt.” It kind of reminded me of Eminems quote.

I definitely agree with this quote and I think we ALL do this at some point. When we have something on our minds and feel we made a mistake, releasing it out in the open releases IT from ourselves.

When i read this quote from Marshal Mathers it really made me think about things that i consider myself weak in. And if I would adopt this saying to my live style it would have a major impact in my life. The reason being is that i would no longer be afraid. When people have any sort of weakness in their life they don’t tell anyone because they are afraid of what other people are going to say about them. But if they are willing to open up they would be surprise how many other people share the same weakness.

As humans in society, it’s always hard to swallow our pride and actually admit to our weaknesses. I feel that Mr. Mathers took a big step, and I can only feel really inspired by him. “When you admit your weakness it takes away their power.” It really does make a lot of sense. You’re only weak because you see or feel that something is holding you back. Once you realize what that weakness is, and fully accept that it is a weakness, there’s only one way to go, and that’s up.

“When you admit your weakness it takes away their power.” This is a great thing to remember in all areas of life but especially in sports. This is why coaches spend so much time analyzing film of the opponent. The idea is to attack those weaknesses and exploit them, however when that becomes the main focus, you tend to forget about your own weaknesses. The best coaches preach to perfect the weaknesses of their own rather than put all of the focus into the opponent. When we focus on our own weakness and rise above, we will surprise our opponents and prevail. It’s kinda like when things aren’t going your way and you start blaming other people for your downfalls. If you take the time to analyze yourself and see what it is that you are doing wrong, you can correct it from the inside out. Admit that you were the problem to begin with and things start getting better.

If you actually stop and listen to Eminem’s music, he has a lot of good things to say. This quote means that when you are willing to admit your weakness, your willing to take away the problems power over you. It is one less person dealing with the problem, trying to stop it one person at a time.
