Take away thier power
Posted on June 24, 2010
I don’t really have an opinion about Marshal Mathers (aka. the rapper M&M) one way or the other, but the other day I heard an interview with him and he said something profound. Apparently he had a serious battle with drug addiction and rather than dealing with it he hid it from everyone around him. He said that he didn’t want to admit he had a drug problem because that was showing weakness. Then, after he nearly lost his life to drugs, he understood a different reality…and this is where the profound statement came in: “When you admit your weakness it takes away their power.” Try it. See if it works for you. It did for me.

This is a very interesting article, because the idea contradicts with many athletes gut feelings and teachings. From day one, especially in football, players are told not to show that they’re hurt, that they’re tired, that they have a weakness. Showing weakness will give the enemy a chance to exploit. For the most part, this is true. If you show weakness, but try to play this weakness as a strength, then you will lose. But if you admit your weakness and use different techniques to prevent this weakness from being taken advantage of, one will win. A clearer example comes from my earl high school football days. As a sophmore, I was nowhere near the size of the guys I played aginst at the varisty level. Basic run blocking, which is taking a defensive player and driving him off the ball, was a huge problem. Instead of trying to drive d linemen off the ball even though I knew I couldn’t, I admitted to this weakness and found other ways to get the job done. I got very proficient at influence and cut blocking, and we won many games.
